I know what you are thinking right now, ‘what do you mean by that question, did Olamide suddenly enter the yahoo yahoo business? Did Phyno decide to start importing and exporting with his many containers?’ Well, no and no! However, asides from those two, is there any other rapper that is ‘musically alive’ at the moment?
M.I is kind of doing off and on. One of his more notable performances in recent times was when he featured on Phyno’s Link Up. Jesse Jags has been on a very annoying sabbatical since God knows when. Ice Prince’s career has long since gone to the land of no return because fans haven’t accepted any track from the ‘Superstar’ artiste ever since people found out that ‘Aboki’ and ‘VIP’ have the same beats/tune.
D’Prince and Dr. Sid weren’t really rappers, to begin with, so we can skip them.
Terry the Rapman, Illbliss, Naeto C, Vector, and Young6ix have all gone AWOL. Only indigenous rappers like Phyno, Lil Kesh, Olamide, and others are reigning now. Rappers like YCEE has gone over to the dark side (singing with pom-pom beat genre) for some unknown reason. And Mode 9 is still, well, Mode 9.
Female MCs are also doing magnificently well in the AWOL streets. Sasha added a ‘P’ to her name and didn’t drop any song after, Eva Alordiah, Muna, Blaise… sigh! where are they all?
Only Falz has been doing justice to the Rap/Hip Hop genre in Nigeria. It’s become so bad that Jidenna used “The Chief” album to take over rap in Nigeria… and he did it from the abroad. We have Davido’s album being categorised as Rap by Sony Music, as well as Wizkid’s SFTOS… Can President Buhari come back already and restore order to the rap industry?
When next are we going to hear great songs like “Anoti”, “Superstar”, “Kini Big Deal”, “Adara”, “Too Much” and other feel-good Hip Hop songs?
I blame rappers for the annoying wave of pom-pom beats and soapy songs that are reigning in the industry at the moment. Yes, I said it and I stand by it!
