2018 was a dynamic year for the Nigerian Music industry. From mainstream to alte, we received a steady stream of albums and singles for our listening pleasure here at VIBE. In no particular order, here are the albums that blew us away this year.
Burna Boy- Outside
Burna Boy kicked off an epic 2018 with his critically acclaimed album “Outside”. With minimal collaborations and mainstream push, the album still provided us with a stream of hits including the new national anthem Ye, Streets of Africa and Rock Your Body.
MI is one of the few Nigerian artists that has firmly positioned himself as an album-oriented musician. From Talk about It to Chairman, MI has provided us with well curated projects and Rendevous is no different. Employing the talents of the alte new school including Nonso Amadi, Santi and Odunsi, MI gives us perfectly blended bars and hooks with hits like Lekki, Playlist and Jungle.
Adekunle Gold- About 30
The industry’s Golden boy, Adekunle Gold blew us away with the track Ire, a soulful ballad that resonated with many. This set the tone for his About 30 album with careful musicality and Adekunle’s signature knack for storytelling. Songs like Call on Me and Money make the album a sure contender for the top albums of 2018.
Show Dem Camp- Palm Wine Music 2
Following the success of their hit album Palm Wine Music, alte royalty Show Dem Camp and their band of talented friends dropped Palm Wine Music 2. Featuring artists like Falana, Ajebutter 22 and Burna Boy, the duo delivered a quality project with songs like Legend, Damiloun and Tropicana.
On the heels of his legal battle with his former label, Brymo has managed to retain his sound and quality with album Oso. The self proclaimed, “greatest Nigerian musician ever” dropped his sixth album this year. The provocative project features songs like ‘Money launderers and heartbreakers’, ‘Time is so kind’, and ‘God is in your mind.’
One of the leaders of the alte new school, Odunsi, released his long anticipated debut album rare. The album features artists like Davido, Tay Iwar, Runtown and Santi. He establishes his unique style with songs like star signs and divine.
Mr Eazi- London to Lagos
Along with a mini documentary of the same title, Mr Eazi dropped his sophomore album Lagos to London in 2018. One of the year’s most talked about projects, the album features a host of heavyweights including Simi, Maleek Berry and Chronixx. It offers an eclectic blend of genres across cultures with songs such as Surrender, Chicken Curry and She Loves Me.
Dj Spinall- Iyanu
One of the industry’s hottest DJ’s teamed up with some of the country’s biggest stars to give us the album Iyanu. From Serious featuring Burna Boy to Nowo featuring Wizkid and Baba featuring Kizz Daniel, it is clear that DJ Spinall was determined to release a hit filled album.
Mayorkun- The Mayor of Lagos
Beloved DMW act Mayorkun has produced a steady stream of hit singles and finally dropped his anticipated debut album The Mayor of Lagos towards the end of 2018. Songs like Mama, Che Che and Red Handed make this album a definite fan favorite.
Greatness by DJ Neptune
Another DJ that dropped an impressive project this year is DJ Neptune. With collaborations from artists such as Patoranking, Reminisce, Olamide and Niniola, the album is eclectic and gives us refreshing versatility. Songs like Shawa Shawa and Wait cement the album’s hit-making potential.
