Nollywood has experienced significant growth in the last five years. Alongside producing high quality and sought after movies, they also have started creating series that have captured the hearts of Nigerians in Nigeria and in the diaspora. Here are some series you should definitely start watching if you haven’t already.
Jenifa’s Diary: Jenifa’s Diary is a spinoff of Jenifa (the movie). The series stars Funke Akindele as the main character and protagonist of the show. The story centers on Jenifa who leaves the village to head to the United States in search of greener pastures. She doesn’t head to the U.S but stays in Lagos and finds herself in University of Lagos.
Tinsel: Tinsel is based on two rival film companies (Reel Studios, founded by Fred Ade-Williams (Victor Olaotan), and Odyssey Pictures, headed by Brenda “Nana” Mensah The show returned for its eighth season on the 25th of May, 2015 after airing its first show in 2008.
Lekki Wives: This hilarious series shows us the struggles of women who live on the Island and the struggles they face. Though some would argue that it’s a spinoff of the American series “Desperate housewives” but lekki wives add a lot of Nigerian touches to it.
Gidi Up: Gidi Up focuses on the lives of young Nigerians trying to make it in Lagos. The show is a YouTube series and has been a hit since it premiered in 2013 and is produced by Jade Osiberu.
SGIT: SGIT (Skinny Girl in Transit): SGIT is centered on Tiwalade, who is trying to lose weight and juggle her ever changing love life. This is also a YouTube series.
