Shout out to Ambode and the entire team that thought it wise to make today work-free due to our precious president’s visit to the centre of excellence that is Lagos state.
A pseudo holiday it is for me (and a lot of others tbh) as my laptop has been sitting on my laps for the past God-knows -how-many hours but that is besides the point of our TBT offering for today.
What better way to welcome Buhari in than to intimate him with a few songs that not only serve as auditory GPS but completely capture the beauty and essence of this beloved concret jungle of ours?
‘Lagos is an addiction…‘
To express the disturbing manner with which I love Lagos, I usually tell a short story that I will share with you before diving into our fantastic Gidi playlist.
I was born and bred in Lagos but for a little while, I had to live in my state of origin, Delta. Don’t get it misconstrued; Delta is an amazing place to come from and to live in but Lagos is an addiction. For eight years, I plotted my grand return into this city of my birth and NYSC was my final escape plan. Sokoto was my initial state of deployment but one fake redeployment later (and 3 months of extension as consequence), let’s just say the rest is history. While in the airport taxi on my first day back in, I wound down the windows and as the carbon-mono-oxide filled air hit me, I knew in that instant that I was home…
This list is by far incomplete as there are many other songs that eulogize Lagos but considering that Baba has a history of ear problems, it is only fair to keep it short. Besides these 3 below, what are your favorite songs about the adorable city of Lasgidi? (I purposely left out Fela’s Eko Ile because as a senior citizen, Bubu go don hear am.)
Jimmy Jatt ft 2baba, Modenine & Elajoe -Stylee
This Lagos wey we dey so, ees awa own!!!!!!! No need for long talk. Jimmy Jatt made a heavy classic and he pulled it off with the best cast. Modenine’s descriptive verse remains untouchable till date and 2face gave the most jivy hook to go with it. Elajoe also came through with some scorching heat!
Modenine ft Silver Saddih: Lagos state of mind:
The Zeus of Nigerian hiphop did what I’d like to call town-planning justice to the great city of Lagos with this evergreen cut that features the mid 2000s Nigerian prince of R&B- Silver Saddih. Please where on earth is this nicca???
Jazzman Olofin/Storm records allstars: Eko Ile
Back when Storm was an industry authority, the crew got together to create this Lagos gbedu called Eko Ile. Eko ILe means the home of Lagos and the track was spear headed by one of my favorite urban indigenous music makers- Jazzman Olofin.
Don’t miss out on these:
