Top 11 Nigerian Controversies of 2016

As the year 2017 approaches, another memorable year full of hot gists, OMG moments, and downright mind-blowing controversies comes to an end.

In 2016, celebrities like Davido, Wizkid, and Toke Makinwa spent more time in the headlines than ever before and Nigerians had a lot to cry and wail about on Social Media. The world watched as America voted in a new president (a result which made Planet Earth herself scream “OMG!”). And new slangs such as ‘Yoruba Demons’ and ‘Men are scum’ were introduced into the internet’s dictionary.

All controversies were hits back-to-back, but we have selected the 11 best controversies in 2016 (in no particular order).

1) Olamide & Don Jazzy

It’s not every day you see the indigenous rapper and the voice of the streets, Olamide a.k.a Baddo, throw his red cup in anger. Nor is it every day you see Don Jazzy calling people out in anger. Talk less of both happening on the same night!

Those were the scenes at the Hip Hop World awards which was held on January 2, 2016.

Olamide also took to twitter to directly attack Don Jazzy for his reply, and even threatened him by saying “Don’t come to the mainland”.

2) Wizkid & Dammy Krane

Ahh! This one will give Spartacus a run for his money. In the gladiator arena that is Quilox Night Club, two gladiators, Wizkid and Dammy Krane went at each other during the games in honour of Obafemi Martins.

The fight ensued when Dammy Krane made a comment Wizkid didn’t like during Obafemi’s party. A typical ‘Nigga moment’ started and bottles were broken, fists were thrown, and chaos erupted.

It was a like a scene out of Spartacus; gods of the arena!

O.B.O lighted the first fireworks of the year with some delicious baby mama drama featuring Sophia and her Uncle, Dele Momodu. The problem started when Ovation Magazine owner, Dele Momodu, stopped the Aye crooner from boarding a plane to Dubai with his daughter. And it’s been one heck of a topsy-turvy internet fight ever since.

Guess that’s why Davido subbed Dele Momodu in most of his songs this year! “Mr Dele na my boy, Dele na my boy” and “no be by force to go Dubai”

Who remembers P-Square’s Busy Body Rmx where they said “Peter and Paul, dem be one no be two”?

The rift started when Peter called out senior brother Jude Okoye for not attending his wedding, and Paul Okoye shut his twin up by taking Jude’s side (Guess there is only one senior bro in Paul’s eyes).

It took a video of a crying female fan, celebrities begging, and a trend on twitter brought them back together.

It was probably all a hoax, but the reactions gotten from the twins alleged split shows just how powerful they are in the industry.

Of all the things that happened on social media this year, nothing compares to the rage and rants that Nigerians dished out when NCC tried imposing new data charges in their bid to curb the use of social media in Nigeria.

Trust Nigerians, the streets of twitter were flooded with memes, rants, abuses, and bants by almost everyone who felt they had to at least enjoy their data and twitter one last time before the hike kicked in.

Thankfully, it was postponed indefinitely! May the indefinitely forever remain indefinitely. Can I get an Amen?
