The Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to live up to the ‘finest jersey at the World Cup’ hype as two goals from either half, earned Croatia a 2-0 win over Nigeria on Saturday night at the Kaliningrad Stadium.
An own goal from Oghenekaro Etebo – which was deflected in from a Mario Mandzukic header and a penalty by Luka Modric in the second, gave Croatia the win.
Nigeria never really created clear-cut scoring chances throughout the match as there was no urgency, and any desire to take at least a point away from the match, with the first shot on target coming from Ighalo’s header in the 59th minute.
Croatia’s win has seen them climb up to the top spot in Group D, with Argentina and Iceland following in second and third respectively. Nigeria will be looking to climb out of the last position when they take on Iceland on Friday.
