Steven Greenberg, the lawyer representing R. Kelly in his trial for criminal sexual abuse, has stated that his client is now facing a tougher battle due to the outcome of Jussie Smollett’s highly-publicized disorderly conduct case.
He believes that the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office will be eager to prosecute Kelly to the fullest extent after dropping 16 felony charges against Smollett.
“I think it makes it more difficult for a friendly disposition because they’re going to be extremely reluctant to admit they brought these cases with scant evidence or that there are any other problems,” Greenberg told entertainment website TMZ.
Greenberg suspects Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx will view Kelly’s case as an opportunity for redemption after facing intense criticism from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson for dropping all charges against Smollett.
R. Kelly has been charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. He is facing up to 70 years in prison if convicted on all counts.
