Lucas Perez scored a hat-trick against Basel in last night’s Champions league match to send Arsenal top, and finish as leaders of Group A, after PSG failed to defeat Ludogorets in France.
The Gunners, fresh from the thrill of their 5-1 demolition of West Ham United during the weekend, in which Alexis Sanchez scored a hat-trick, continued their rampant and unbeaten streak in the Champions League. Lucas Perez, continuing what may likely become a trend, came back into the team after a month out due to an ankle injury, to score his own hat-trick for the gunners in his first Champions League start.
Alex Iwobi scored Arsenal’s fourth and last goal of the night in the 53rd minute with Ozil getting thr credit for the assist. Basel substitute Seydou Doumbia, gave the Basel fans a consolation goal 12 minutes from time, but it wasn’t enough, as Arsenal’s thrashing, and the result from Ludogoret’s match ended their European adventure.
Paris Saint Germain got the shock of their lives, as Bulgaria opposition, Ludogorets, finished their UEFA champions League campaign on a high note by drawing 2-2 with the French Champions in France, thereby qualifying for the Europa League.
The result, which pushed PSG down to second and propelled Arsenal to top spot, means that the Gunners can avoid the likes of Atletico Madrid and Barcelona in the next round. However, German champions Bayern Munich, and either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund, can still be major threats to Arsenal’s chances in the round of 16.
The gunners will have to wait till Monday when the draws for the round of 16 will take place to know who their opposition will be.
