It was a joyous day for Nigerian footballers at the Glo-CAF 2016 award ceremony in Abuja on Thursday night, as four Nigerians bagged awards at the ceremony for outstanding performances and the team as a whole.
Although no Nigerian made it to the 5-man shortlist for the CAF best player of the year – Which was eventually won by Algerian winger, Riyad Mahrez, – Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala made it a joyous occasion for Nigerians by winning the 2016 Women’s Player of the Year for her outstanding performance in at the Women’s African Cup of Nations.
The Arsenal Ladies FC forward, was also the highest goalscorer in the tournament, scoring six goals to help Nigeria win the title at Cameroon’s expense.
The Super Falcons bagged the 2016 Women’s Team of the Year Award, beating South Africa and Cameroon to claim it.
Kelechi Iheanacho won the Most Promising Talent of the Year Award. The Super Eagles and Manchester City striker currently holds the record for the best goal-per-minute ratio in the English Premier League.
Arsenal and Super Eagles forward Alex Iwobi won the 2016 Youth Player of the Year Award to make it four wins on the night for Nigerian football.
Sadly, both youngsters will miss out on the 2017 AFCON tournament starting on January 14, as Nigeria failed to qualify for the tournament.
Uganda won the 2016 National Team of the Year Award, beating DR Congo and Senegal to it. All three nations will play in the 2017 AFCON tournament.
The 2016 Awards ceremony marked the silver jubilee (25 years) was a spectacular celebration marked with lots of music, dancing, and colourful cultural display, with Artistes like Femi Kuti, Yemi Alade, Flavour, and Omawunmi all performing at the event.
