Nigerians are still buzzing over the 3-1 demolition of Algeria, and with good reason. We can’t remember the last time we were this proud of football in the country.
Since winning the African Cup of Nations Trophy, Nigeria went downhill football-wise. This cost them qualification for the same competition the following year and not being able to defend the trophy, which to any football lover, is as shameful as a team can get.
The last players from the oldies to play with passion for the nation were Kanu Nwankwo and Jay Jay Okocha. However, things are finally looking up and with good reason. Compared to before, where ‘big names and Nigerians playing overseas’ were the ones always being called up to play for our country. Players who felt too big to play for the country, who didn’t care for the outcome, and preferred wearing their club jerseys to the green and white of the super eagles. Little wonder why we had little or no success over the years.
Now, the passion to play and win in the team is something you can see in every single player on the pitch. No player feels too big to play for the country, (even Captain Mikel Obi was rumoured to have sponsored the Olympic team out of his personal finances), and that is really something amazing to see. Youngsters like iheanacho and Iwobi, who deserve a place on the team are being used, instead of the ‘big names’ and players that play in Europe.
With this passion, the sky is the limit for the Super Eagles, and this team, with the right tactics and passion can achieve a lot, and make Nigerians dream of cup glory again!
