It’s been 20 years since the death of the pioneer of the Afrobeat genre, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti but it seems like he birthed a never vanishing evolution of exhilarating instrumentals and laudable lyrical content. Using pounding eclectic rhythms drawn from Nigerian traditional music; ‘Afro beat’ puts you in a trance of heightened fever and causes elaborate body movement. Through the likes of D’banj, Wizkid, Davido, Femi Kuti, Tu face, Drey tunz, e.t.c, it can be rightly said that Fela created an incurable virus, which I name “The Afro virus”.
Evolved is one word that can be used to describe this Delta boy. Afro beat, Dance Hall, Rap, R&B, Hip Hop, Love Songs are all the genres that this young man seems to be capable of excelling at. Drey Tunz apparently has latched on to this ‘Afro fever’ and is definitely getting it right.
Born on the 16th of May 1995, Drey is a fast rising Nigerian Afro beat singer. Signed to LongMoney Entertainment and a student of Delta State University, he started his musical career in 2013, recorded a song with Skales “Turn me on” in 2015 and now, he’s still working on his EP which he promises would be a banger. The tune “FOR YOU” feat Yung6ix is definitely a jam.
Omajuwa Awani Arnold aka Drey Tunz.
HOW DID MUSIC START FOR YOU?
It was really difficult. I was in Delta where I was living before I moved to Lagos, trying to get my record out there. In Delta state there’s no music vibe. People over there don’t appreciate music as much so trying to record was really difficult for me and I just kept pushing on and believing in myself and that’s what it is.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW SINGLE
I got the inspiration from my friend. His girl was always cheating on him and he kept telling me about it, he would say “yo Drey Tunz, this girl keeps doing this and that”. So I had to pick out some things from his story and add it to what I had already come up with and I wrote the song.
HOW DID THE COLLABORATION WITH YUNGSIX HAPPEN?
When I got the inspiration for “For you”, I had to figure out who I wanted to be on the track and I found out that Yungsix was the best person to put on the song, so I contacted him and told him about the song and he asked me to come over to his house and we got the song done. It was really nice to work with everyone especially Yungsix, he’s a great guy.
HOW HAS THE RECEPTION OF THE SONG BEEN?
Yeah, it’s really really good. Response from my friends and my fans in Dm has been massive. There are good things coming up. I got an increase of followers on my Instagram and twitter, so I don’t intend to relent. I have to keep pushing on.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? ARE YOU RELEASING AN ALBUM?
Yeah, I’m working on my E.P. It’s titled “Choose one”, trust me it’s going to be a blast. I have a lot of good tracks there, it’s going to be 5 tracks, I’m planning on doing a collaboration with Simi. It’s going to be a great one.
SO ASIDES YUNGSIX AND SIMI, WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO COLLABORATE WITH IN THE INDUSTRY?
I would love to have a collaboration with Burnaboy and Wizkid. They are great guys.
HOW DO YOU RELAX WHEN YOU ARE NOT DOING MUSIC?
I love playing games so I relax with my PS game a lot.
