Reigning champions Ivory Coast were held to a goalless draw by Adebayor’s Togo in their Group C opening match at the 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The elephants, one of the favourites to lift the trophy had big names such as Wilfred Zaha, Serge Aurier, and Eric Bailly as opposed to Togo who only had a clubless Emmanuel Adebayor, failed to start their title defence with a much-expected victory against Togo.
Ivory Coast struggled to get going in the opening 45 minutes, though, and Togo arguably had the better chances before the break, with Mathieu Dossevi, in particular, going close.
The Elephants improved somewhat in the second half and looked dangerous via Crystal Palace ace Zaha, but they failed to break down a resilient Togo defence and had to settle for a point.
Ivory Coast meet DR Congo on Friday in their second group game, while Togo takes on Morocco.
In the other Group C match played on Monday, DR Congo defeated Morocco 1-0 to go top of group C.
The 2015 semi-finalists who were one man down as a result od Joyce Lomalisa Mutambala getting sent off, had Junior Kabananga to thank for giving the fans something to cheer about when he capitalised on a goalkeeping error from Munir to give a slim 1-0 victory.
Substitute Joyce Lomalisa Mutambala was sent off in the 81st minute for two bookings in quick succession and DR Congo were forced to play some of the closing stages with nine men due to an injury to captain Gabriel Zakuani, who did return for stoppage time.
But Morocco could not find an equaliser and DR Congo will now look to cement a place in the quarter-finals when they face Ivory Coast on Friday.
