The Wedding Party Sets New Box Office Record

The Nigerian movie industry – Nollywood, had its best year yet in the country’s history, as the total gross of movies, this year was N1 Billion from 50 locally-produced movies.

Cinema ticket sales were at an all-time high as Nigerians across the country trooped in their masses amidst the recession to watch high quality movies with wonderful storylines, and humour to take their minds off the economic woes. Movies like Wives on Strike, ’76, The CEO, 93 Days, and A Trip to Jamaica.

The Wedding Party, however, peaked the charts and in just 18 days, has already been dubbed “The movie of the year”.

The movie, which stars stellar casts like Banky W, Adesuwa Etomi, Richard Mofe-Damijo, the ever-energetic Sola Sobowale, and Iretiola Doyle, opened with an amazing N36 million on the weekend, N66 million in its opening week, N110 million in a week, and a Christmas total of N146 million.

The Wedding Party grossed N200 million before the New Year week was over – in 18 days. Beating AY’s A Trip To Jamaica’s record of N176 million in two months, thereby making it the highest grossing Nollywood movie of all time.

Cinemas all across the country had sold out tickets for each movie screening, with some people not minding sitting on the stairs or standing in the hall to watch the movie for a second or even a third time.

Families trooped in their numbers to support and watch the movie, laugh, and have a good time, with no one giving a bad review and saying it is “money well spent”.

ELFIKE Film Collective, the producers of the movie, collaborated with the likes of Kemi Adetigba (Director), EbonyLife Films, Film One Distribution, Koga Studios, and Inkblot Productions to make sure the movie was top-notch in the picture and sound quality, acting, and appeal.


The Wedding party follows the shenanigans that go on during the planning of a wedding in Nigeria. Dunni a 24-year-old art gallery owner and only daughter of her parents, Engineer Bamidele and Mrs Tinuade Coker, is about to marry the love of her life, IT entrepreneur Dozie the handsome son of Felix and Obianuju Onwuka. The couple took a vow of chastity and are looking forward to a ground -breaking first night together as a married couple.

The Wedding Party is currently showing in cinemas nationwide.
