#ValentinesDay Playlist: 7 Nigerian Songs That Tell Perfect Love Stories

It’s another Valentine’s Day; a day to show how much we love and value our significant others or just to show love generally to other people on earth. I’m sure we are already feeling the love in the air as Nigerians love to celebrate and show love.

In honour of love, which is what Val’s Day is all about, here are seven love songs that you should definitely put on your playlist today.

Banky W – Strong Thing

Strong Thing was the song that put Banky W at the forefront of RnB in Nigeria. It made everyone fall in love over and over again with the tempo, lyrics and the beat that synchronised perfectly with our heartbeats. If this song doesn’t scream love, then I don’t know what will.

Darey – Not The Girl

Arguably Nigeria’s King of RnB and love songs, Darey Art Alade gave us the cherry on top of the icing on love’s cake with “Not The Girl.” Although the song is more about heartbreak than love, it is still a song that will no doubt put you in your feels this Valentine’s Day.

D’banj – Fall in Love

You know when the Kokomaster falls in love, water don pass garri. D’banj shocked the world when he released “Fall in Love” because that was a category of music no one ever expected the Kokomaster to dabble in, and guess what, the song was really great. He had us all feeling the love with this one. I know a lot of guys that have sung this song to their lovers before (don’t worry, I wouldn’t call your names here. Your secret is safe with me!).

Cobhams Asuquo – Ordinary people

Even though most people spend Val’s Day with their significant others, Vals Day is also a day to spend with people who feel less loved; orphans, widows, destitute, hungry, sick, etc. And Cobhams Asuquo’s “Ordinary People” is a song that does just that. It is a song that reminds us to love others as much as we love ourselves and not to place ourselves higher than others. Love is beyond family and friends, people.

TuFace Idibia – True Love

This list wouldn’t be complete without the legendary Tuface Idibia making an appearance now, would it? Tuface always knows how to bring the love in every album and he’s been doing that for the better part of 20 years. True Love is one of my all-time favs from 2Baba as it is a love song that will surely put you in the putty mood.

Tiwa Savage – Eminado

Queen Tee is hands-down the most consistent female musician in Nigeria, and arguably Africa. Her song “Eminado” featuring Don Jazzy is one love song that gets you in the love zone while dancing and shaking your body. Everything about the song screams love and it is one that you and bae can even sing along to together.

Kiss Daniel – Mama

You know you own love songs when almost every wedding in the country plays your song. Kiss Daniel won with “Mama.” Almost every wedding clip I’ve seen since 2016 has the newlyweds dancing to “Mama” and that alone is enough proof why this song is one of the best love songs to come out of Nigeria and perfect for Valentine’s Day.
