Awwww! Benita’s throwback cover art!

The world marked the International Day of The Girl Child yesterday -the 11th of October 2017 and the web was lit with inspiration-filled content of praise, encouragement and facts about being a girl in a dynamic world.
One of them which stood out was the UN-powered video of Beyonce’s “Freedom” song that saw little girls singing and dancing along, as jaw-dropping facts and some really sad statistics were reeled out.

If the figures from this video don’t make your stomach churn, I’m not sure what will.
It is unfortunate that one cannot choose the conditions under and into which they are born in but the good news is that we can collectively lend our voice to manipulate these conditions and make sure the world is safe, free and fair for every and anyone; boy, or girl.

Moving on; adding the Day of the Girl Child to Tuneback Thursday only spells one name. Benita Okojie!

Gosh! We were all spell-bound by this little miss sweet-face when she stormed the scene wit the confidence of an adult, singing her heart out so beautifully of a Higher Being she most likely did not even yet fully understand at her age then. Despite singing a number of her numbers (😁) in the Esan dialect, her aura and talent smashed language barriers. The ones that still couldn’t grasp the language flipped it into one of Nigeria’s biggest street virals till date.

Trust Nigerians and their wahala…See the lyrics of the remix they made out of the girl’s song.

On your wedding day,

eshin shin go be your flower girl,

akwa Oche go be your wedding gown,

Garri Go Be your wedding cake

Garri dey, Garri dey, elo ra sugar wa o Garri dey x2

Anyway, that was many many years ago and Benita is now a big, big girl. She’s still killing it musically on the faith scene though…🎤🎤

And has even gone on to start her own family.💏

I doubt that any child singer has really peaked since Little Benita but there’s a new young lady in town that I’m keeping my eyes on by the name Naomi Peller.
She just released her debut single called “Believe” and I think it is super fantastic for an 11-year-old. I won’t be surprised if she suddenly becomes the next big thing though. It’s the only thing to expect when you are a product of an entertainment-driven family like Shina Peller’s.
