If we’re being real, 2018 was a very serious rollercoaster ride in terms of music and the industry as a whole. Many artistes left their management, musicians that we thought had retired made a comeback, our favourite twins went head-to-head and tried proving their capabilities as single artistes, legends continued being legends, some upcoming artistes finally made their mark, and the industry had the expected cocktail of good and very bad songs… with the bad songs as always, having the edge.
So what are we to expect from the music industry in 2019? THE EXACT SAME THING!
The Nigerian music industry is basically the embodiment of “New Year, Same Me”! Now bear with me and indulge me for a moment before you come for my head. Let me explain why I said so.
Looking back through all the years, the music industry hasn’t really changed. If we’re being honest, the most exciting thing that has happened so far is still that year that Wizkid and Davido had a “beef” and were releasing some really exciting jams even though their respective albums ended up not doing so well at the end of the day. Which was from 2016-2017.
Take a look at last year. Four big artistes actually made a serious mark in the industry; Burna Boy, Davido, Tuface, Wizkid. Two upcoming artistes, Teni and Peruzzi, finally got the credit due to them, DMW was arguably the best label of the year, and Kizz Daniel, RunTown, and Reekado Banks all left their respective labels. And if you go back in time, it’s been the same thing over and over.
There is also the issue of giving awards to the wrong artistes or putting musicians in the wrong award category. We can also talk about the many politics being played and also the substandard events and disrespect that musicians, show organisers, and award organisers constantly do year in year out to music lovers, fans, and stans alike.
Now let’s talk about the number of shitty songs that we should be expecting this year because there will be a whole lot. Although I admit that there are many unknown (underground) good songs in the music space (God knows how much I wish these were the ones that were more popular), but there are a shitload of really distasteful songs in the industry, and we can expect more of the same this year. It’s really, really sad actually when you think about it. That’s one of the reasons why the industry focuses on the already proven artistes because we are managing the good music that they are giving us. A lot of upcoming artistes make bad music in the name of being called a musician. Then they release it and expect us to buy or stream their songs with our data. It’s quite hilarious if we are being honest. But we should expect more of this in 2019.
Anyways, with this few points of mine, I hope I have been able to convince you and not confuse you as to why nothing will change in the music industry in 2019.
