La Liga: Rivals Are Now The Obstacles In The Race To Lift The Trophy

La Liga has for the past seven years been the most dominant league in Europe and European competitions. With Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid always making it to either the finals or winning the Champions League. While the same Atletico and Sevilla also ran rampant in the Europa League before what has become a permanent crossover (for Atletico at least) to the Champions League.

However, the 2016/17 Spanish league has brought back the same “norm” that football fans have gotten used to – and indeed expected. The two El Clasico teams are at it neck-to-neck once again for the league trophy.

Barcelona had a very shaky start to the season but managed to pick up shortly after Luis Enrique announced his retirement at the end of this season. The Catalan giants currently top of the table with 4 games to go. Their chances of lifting the trophy at the end of the season largely depends – to an extent – on the outcome of Real Madrid’s game in hand. The advantage Barca have in the race to the La Liga trophy is the fact that coupled with Real Madrid’s game in hand, the Los Blancos also have two Champions League matches to play with the extremely tough rival, Atletico Madrid. The possible fixture-jam that Real Madrid will face can cause an expected fatigue which may see them draw or lose their game in hand… either result will delight Barcelona more than winning the El Clasico.

Real Madrid still has Sevilla and Valencia to play, while Barcelona has Espanyol and Villareal to play. All very tough fixtures.

The battle for third and fourth is a very close one between Atletico Madrid and Sevilla. Atletico, who are currently in third position have one game less than Sevilla in fourth. But Sevilla’s game in hand can cause problems for Atletico Madrid because a win for Sevilla will see them put the pressure on and be on the same point with Atletico Madrid.. though the Los Indios will still rank higher based on goal difference.

Real Madrid will have to win all their remaining matches to lift the trophy. A loss or a draw for Los Blancos will see Barca’s goal difference come into play – which means Real Madrid will need 17 goals to overturn the current deficit else Barca will be the ones having the last laugh at the end of the day.

Real Madrid needs at least 4 wins and 1 draw to win La Liga

Barcelona needs 4 wins to win La Liga

Atletico Madrid needs 4 wins to keep their third place.

Sevilla needs 5 wins and 17 goals to finish third. provided Atletico Madrid fails to meet their own conditions.

So what do you think? What team do you think will win La Liga, and what will the final top 4 outcomes be? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comment section below.
