Illbliss and Teckzilla are two of the few who have continued to fan the coals of Nigerian hip-hop and with their latest synergistic effort – Illyzilla, the duo have definitely fanned out a warming flame.
Considering their foundations (Illbliss from Thoroughbred, Teckzilla from Str8buttah), both artistes have earned their stripes as veterans of the genre and have continued as double-edged swords, retaining relevance in the creative and executive areas of music business.
Illyzilla is a compact package of 6 tracks, with Teckzilla supplying the beats and Illbliss supplying the performances, save for 2 features from soul singer Uzezi and Str8buttah’s frontliner Phlow.
Be Great is the introductory track where Illbliss lays the blueprint of his definition of greatness, declares himself a cross breed of Nas and Royce and shares his dislike for mumble rapping. We Are Not Mates follows immediately and is supported with some excerpts from Notorious Big’s hook on Lets Get it On. Here, Illy recounts his feats, highlighting the tactics that have kept him afloat in our cutthroat industry.
Don is pretty much an audio guide on how to win in the music business and in life generally. Phlow’s first appearance is on this hook and she spits confidently about walking and talking like a don.
Queens is Teckzilla and Illbliss’ idea of a love song and it sees Uzezi on the hook and Phlow delivering a verse around the same subject matter. Illy gets back to his horn blowing on Lead or Follow; a cut that transitions into a sampled interview from Mi Abaga’s Fix Up Your Lives. Things wrap up with The Synergy, which symbolically serves as an affirmation of the coming together of 2 forces to create the Illyzilla piece.
Very reminiscent of Modenine and XYZ’s Alphabetical Order, collaborations like these are a delight to see in the hiphop space as it tells of a willingness to push the genre above and beyond its faulty notion of stagnancy in the industry.
