While members of the human race were busy making resolutions they had no intentions to keep, and partying into the new year, 2016 had other plans. From the local scale of the Olamide-Donjazzy Headies rift that opened the year, to the global scale of the US presidential elections and everything in between, it is safe to say that 2016 will be ushered to the front row of memorable history.
2016 as we all know, was an emotional cocktail of newsworthy happenings. In no particular arrangement, here are a few that had every tongue on social media wagging for a longer time than normal.
Olamide vs Donjazzy
On the very first day of 2016, these 2 Nigerian music icons left the mouths of many agape as they verbally threw shots at each other over a Headies award category, on live tv. Bitter about his protege Lil Kesh losing to Reekado Banks, Olamide spat bile on stage which caused a clap back from Don Jazzy. Social media platforms caught fire as fans started to take the sides of their favourite entertainer. The issue even birthed sub trends like the case of Dija’s neck being likened to a pepsi long throat bottle and Kiss Daniel’s lack of a godfather to fight for him.
A Jumoke’rella story
Pretty much a stuff made for fairytales; Jumoke’s 2016 was written in the stars. The young bread seller became an overnight celebrity after she was captured in a shot while randomly waltzing past a Ty Bello – Tinie Tempah outdoor photography set. Looking like part of the masterplan, Jumoke went from being the photobomber, to being the photographed personality; with Ty Bello starring as fairy godmother. Besides being featured by every reputable media house around the world, Jumoke received a modelling contact, scholarships for herself and her children, sponsorship and endorsements from leading industry brands.
Tiwa & Teebillz Freakshow
On one fine sunny day in 2016, cryptic messages started to pour out of the instagram handle of Tiwa Savage’s significant other, Tee Billz. Billz was later revealed to have been intercepted by Banky W while attempting to commit suicide. His prior messages revealed some gory allegations against his wife to the tone of infidelity; which birthed a counter revelation from Tiwa Savage in a 45minute heart wrenching interview.
The Other Room
This phrase came to be when Nigerian President General Muhammad Buhari implied on international live tv that his wife had no business in his political affairs but belonged to his kitchen and his “other room”. His statement was provoked by a BBC radio interview which Aisha had granted, sharing her concerns about her husband’s lagging administration. In addition to all the obvious elements that made this trend viral, Buhari made this outrageous statement while on an official visit to Germany; a country ironically headed by a woman. Here is a feature we did with regards to the issue:- 11 Songs President Buhari Desperately Needs On His Playlist
Moving on to lighter things, a phenomenon where people froze like mannequins while being filmed, took over the world scene and became a hot viral trend. Black Beatles by urban hiphop group Rae Sremmurd inexplicably became the soundtrack for this challenge which shot the song No 1 on many charts. In no time, Nigerians took to trend and made many hilarious and extremely creative versions. Some of the most talked about challenges include Blac Chyna’s birth and Hillary Clinton’s campaign versions.
The extramarital affair of penguins
As is the fashion of NatGeo to put a dramatic story line behind shots of animals filmed in action, this one stood out distinctly. A video of 3 penguins dealing with infidelity and heartbreak kept the world talking for days. We even spun this story out of it! :- Mr and Mrs Penguin : Why she may pick the side dude over you
An obscene video of Nigerian ex beauty queen Chidinma, flooded the media and went on to become the most searched topic on Google at the time. With many others bubbling under: Solomon Dalung and the Olympics drama, Bob Risky, Harambe, US Elections and a gazillion more, it can be said with confidence that 2016 was indeed a movie. What trend stood out the most for you?
